The wait is finally over – Volvo has been introducing the world to its smallest SUV ever, the Volvo EX30 and we have been part of the launch in Milan. This compact SUV boasts a sleek design and impressive features, making it the perfect choice for those who want a smaller vehicle without sacrificing luxury and performance – and for a very attractive price.

The EX30 from Volvo marks the entrance into a new and rapidly expanding market segment for Volvo. Consumers worldwide are increasingly in search of small, all-electric premium SUVs, and this model is designed to meet that demand. Safety is a priority; it has been built to give both drivers and pedestrians alike protection in busy urban areas, such as its 'dooring' accident prevention system which warns drivers when someone is passing by before they open their door. The latest safety technology further showcases Volvo’s commitment to driver safety with the EX30.

This vehicle also offers a true SUV experience while running on electricity, packed with the essential smart tech features one would need. And to sweeten the deal even more, customers can purchase it much like an equivalent with a combustion engine – around 36.000 EUR.

Exterior design

The Volvo EX30 is Volvo's most eco-friendly car yet, making life safer and more enjoyable with its advanced technology and classic Scandinavian design. The long wheelbase, large wheels, and equal overhangs create a well-balanced look on the exterior. Furthermore, it features a bold front end, a closed shield, and an adaptation of the Thor’s Hammer headlights to further emphasise its electric nature. Five vibrant colours give the vehicle character from Cloud Blue to Moss Yellow, which was inspired by lichen growing on rocks along Sweden’s west coast.

Interior design

The modern and clean look of Volvo’s EX30 interior displays the brand’s consideration for environmentally conscious design with its use of reused and renewable fabrics, like denim, flax, and wool, along with a range of diverse colours and finishes. The user experience is simplified: all the information is on one screen at a time, giving you only what you need when you need it. Plus, features like a soundbar across the dash and plenty of convenient storage creates an almost luxurious atmosphere.

The revolutionary soundbar in the Volvo EX30, the first of its kind to be installed in a vehicle, has taken design cues from home audio systems. It is comprised of multiple speakers which produce sound throughout the interior of the car. When combined with Harman Kardon'shigh-end sound system, it provides exceptional audio quality.

The soundbar is a prime example of thoughtful design, as it combines the speakers into one piece, relieving clutter. Located just beneath the windshield, it fits in with the look and feel of the cockpit. By removing the door speakers, more room was available for storage compartments and shelves. The power window switches have been moved to the center console so that both driver and front seat passenger can easily access them.

When buying a Volvo EX30, customers have four options for interiors. All of the designs share sustainability as a common value, each with its own unique aesthetic. For instance, one of the options uses denim waste and recycled plastic from broken window frames. There is also a wool blend made out of 70 percent recycled polyester and a textured material for seats comprised of upcycled plastic. The last interior option is Nordico which contains recycled PET bottles and organic materials from Scandinavian forests.

The Volvo EX30 is a marvel of eco-friendly engineering, containing 25% recycled aluminum, 17% recycled steel, and 17% recycled plastics. Its interior boasts a variety of recycled and renewable materials that make it as sustainable as it is stylish.

Drive, performance and charging

The new Volvo EX30 provides a powerful and highly efficient driving experience with its electric drive. There are three performance levels with both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive. The entry level is the 200 kW (272 hp) Single Motor version, with a 51 kWh high voltage battery allowing for up to 344 km distance (according to WLTP cycle). This version also has an Extended Range option with a 69 kWh battery for a range of about 480 km. For the Twin Motor Performance AWD, the all wheel drive and two electric motors combined produce 315 kW (428 hp) of power, enabling the Volvo EX30 to reach 100 km/h from 0 in just 3.6 seconds, making it the fastest Volvo ever. With the 69 kWh battery, this model covers a maximum distance of 460 km. One pedal driving in all variants gives more comfort and increases range as well; other standard features include a heat pump (not single motor) and an 11 kW onboard charger (22 kW onboard charger for Ultra series). Charging time from 10% to 80% is 26 minutes at DC fast charging stations, taking up to 153 kW (134 kW for single motor, 51 kWh battery).

The Volvo EX30, a new all-electric car, has earned our highest admiration. Its modern, sleek look, dedication to eco-friendliness, and small size make it an ideal car for cities while not lacking luxury, safety or entertainment technology.
