DeLorean’s all-new gull-winged Alpha5 EV launches them into the future

DeLorean’s all-new gull-winged Alpha5 EV

Back in April, we already wrote about the DeLorean EVolved teasers, a fully electric car and the result of a 40+ year collaboration between the brand and motion design company Italdesign. DeLorean now shows us some more impressions about their upcoming electric car.

Quick refresher – DeLorean is a small company, but globally known for their legendary stainless steel DMC, which was featured in the science-fiction classic ‘Back to the Future’ and only sold in the 80s.

After so many years of radio silence, the new concept car certainly wowed us – and has been a long-awaited move in the industry and with fans alike. With this rebranding and new breath of life, DeLorean is committed to producing all electric vehicles, while of course still staying true to its futuristic identity.

DeLorean’s rebranding

With this new breath of life comes of course a new digital identity, redesigned to fit the brand’s future-facing new vehicles. The new website opened today to the public and has been exhibiting an eye-catching countdown leading up to the much-awaited release of the DeLorean ALPHA5 EV. When you first get on the page, you’re hit with one of the brand’s mottos: “DeLorean is unapologetically human. A New Energy mobility brand. We have a clear vision of our future, knowing it does not represent today.”

“The DMC-12 was never meant to be a static interpretation of the brand, the brand would constantly evolve. Our icons are reimagined. DMC is and always was in constant evolution. An Icon is validated over time but to constantly reimagine mobility allows new icons to come into existence.”

DeLorean brands themselves with the follwing three words: “Rebellious. Iconic. Design.” These words are perfectly chosen to represent the brand’s overhaul, coming from this historic and iconic vehicle that was the DMC, all the way up to their brand new electric cars, still with a very strong emphasis on design.

The ALPHA 5 EV

DeLorean is giving the first complete look at the highly anticipated Alpha5, their all-new EV, after teasing audiences with some sneak peeks. The fully electric vehicle is first and foremost striking due to its exterior – sleek lines, classic louvres, and DeLorean’s iconic gull-wing doors. Also striking are its estimated specifications, including a range of 300+ miles (around 480 km), battery of 100+ kWh, and electronically limited top speeds of 155 mph (250 km/h).

"The Alpha5 is a representation of the past 40 years of DeLorean. There was this enormous responsibility to make sure we honoured the history of the DeLorean brand, but an even greater responsibility in curating its future...I think we did both with the Alpha5.” – Troy Beetz, Chief Marketing Officer of DeLorean Motor Company

Indeed, the Alpha5 is carrying DeLorean’s legacy with flying colours, starting with the exterior of the car and its compelling presence. Taking design cues from the past to inspire the future, the new EV visibly showcases its iconic DNA and rebellious yet purposeful design.

As for the interior of the car, the Alpha5 provides an environment that encourages human experience and connections. It represents the perfect balance between artificial support and human control, all packaged within intelligent intuitive human design and craftsmanship. You can check out some of the early sketches for the Alpha5 on DeLorean’s website, giving you insights into the design process.

The car will be unveiled on August 18, 2022 at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California.
