In a groundbreaking move towards a sustainable future, BMW Group Plant Munich is gearing up for a new era of electric mobility. As of 2026, the iconic parent plant is set to produce the Neue Klasse sedan, marking a pivotal moment in the company's journey towards an all-electric lineup. By the end of 2027, the Munich plant will transition exclusively to manufacturing all-electric models, solidifying its status as a trailblazer in the BMW Group's commitment to e-mobility.

Contributing to the iconic brand identity

The Munich plant, often considered the heart of BMW, is recognised for its innovation and adaptability. Peter Weber, Director BMW Group Plant Munich, highlights the plant's role in reinventing itself: "Munich is the beating heart of BMW. The plant in Munich is innovative and adaptable. As in the 1960s, a Neue Klasse is again laying the foundation, on which our plant is reinventing itself."

The extensive modifications, including a new vehicle assembly line and body shop, signify a commitment to securing a long-term future for the Munich location. The 650 million € investment paves the way for the production of the Neue Klasse sedan and aligns with BMW's dedication to sustainability and innovation.

Transitioning seamlessly to e-mobility

The transition to e-mobility at BMW Group Plant Munich has been a testament to adaptability. From the manufacturing of plug-in hybrid models in 2015 to the production of the first all-electric vehicle, the BMW i4, in 2021, the plant has been at the forefront of evolving automotive technologies. Presently, every second vehicle produced features an all-electric drive system. Starting in 2026, the production of the Neue Klasse will initially run alongside current models at the Munich plant. By the end of 2027, the parent plant will exclusively produce all-electric vehicles. This significant milestone marks the end of combustion engine vehicles in Munich, exactly 75 years after the launch of the BMW 501.

Digitalisation and sustainability at the core

BMW Group Plant Munich's transformation is not just physical; it's also rooted in digitalisation. Following the principles of BMW iFACTORY, the plant embraces comprehensive digitalisation with a focus on data science, artificial intelligence, and virtualisation. This ensures utmost flexibility, excellent processes, and outstanding integrability across all BMW Group sites.

BMW Group Plant Munich's successful transformation reflects its commitment to embracing e-mobility. With its forward-thinking approach and state-of-the-art production capabilities, the plant is ready to shape the future of the automotive industry.
